WhatsApp QR code not working: a troubleshooting guide

Tanay PatelAI and full-stack engineer
The short answer

Test the link behind the QR code before reprinting it. If the link works but the code will not scan, inspect the image and print. If it scans but opens the wrong chat or fails to open, inspect the destination and number. A QR scan does not send a message for the customer.

Find the exact failure

Use a phone camera to inspect the destination before opening it. Record whether nothing is recognised, a link opens, WhatsApp opens, or a message is actually sent. These are four different steps.

If the destination is a shortened or redirected link, inspect each step using your authorised tools. An expired redirect service can break a printed code even when the WhatsApp number remains valid. Do not replace the number until you know which step failed.

Check the printed version

If the raw link works, compare a digital scan with a scan of the final printed material. Look for cropping, blur, low contrast, a missing clear border or a fold across the pattern. Test under the lighting and distance customers will actually use.

Keep a readable fallback link or contact instruction near the code. A decorative logo should not hide enough of the pattern to make real phones struggle. There is no universal print size in this guide; validate the specific output before ordering a batch.

Check the customer experience after scanning

A useful prefilled message identifies the task: "I would like details about the city-branch consultation." Avoid a long form of personal information in the URL. Links can appear in browser history and analytics.

The customer can edit the prefilled text or leave without sending. Do not count scans as conversations, consent or bookings. If the link opens the right chat with the right draft, the QR path worked even when no message was sent.

Approve a QR code before distributing it

Record the campaign owner, final destination, business profile checked, print proof and test date. Try the link on more than one available phone and from the final material.

After changing a number or redirect, retest old posters, packaging and PDFs. Keep an inventory of where the code appears so you can replace it deliberately. If the destination is untrusted or unexpectedly asks for credentials, stop distributing it and investigate before customers use it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Will scanning the code automatically send a message?

No. A click-to-chat link opens the conversation or a draft. The customer still chooses whether to send.

Do I need a new code after changing the number?

A code containing the old direct link still points to it. Update the destination through a controlled redirect if one was used, or replace the code and printed material.
