Build a dynamic contact segment

A dynamic segment answers a question about current workspace data, such as "customers who messaged in the last 30 days". Unlike a static segment, you do not add or remove its contacts by hand. Waaru evaluates the saved rule when the audience is used.

Choose the right segment type

Use a Static segment for an intentional list that a person or import controls. Use a Dynamic segment when membership should follow contact data or activity without manual upkeep.

A dynamic rule can use:

• contact fields such as country, locale, source, opt-out state, and activity dates;
• typed custom attributes;
• relative dates such as the last inbound or outbound message;
• contact labels or membership in existing static segments;
• campaign outcomes within the available time window and campaign scope.

Consent and sender restrictions are not bypassed by a matching rule. Final broadcast eligibility is checked for the selected WhatsApp number when the campaign is activated.

Create and preview the rule

1. Open Segments and select Create segment.
2. Choose Dynamic - evaluate a live rule.
3. Enter a durable name and optional description.
4. Add conditions to the first group. Every condition inside one group must match.
5. Add another group only when either group may match. Groups use OR; conditions inside a group use AND.
6. Select Preview matches and check the count and sample contacts.
7. Create the segment when the preview represents the audience you intended.

A preview reflects the data available at its evaluation time. It is evidence that the rule works, not a fixed recipient list.

Change a dynamic segment safely

Open the segment to edit its current membership rule. Preview the change before saving it. Saving creates a new rule revision so a campaign or Automation that already pinned an earlier revision does not silently change underneath active work.

If the page reports that the segment changed in another session, reload the current revision before applying your edit. This prevents one teammate from overwriting another teammate's rule.

Use the segment in a broadcast or Automation

The broadcast builder records the selected dynamic rule revision. Review any revision warning before publishing a draft created earlier.

In an Automation flow, use Select audience to freeze the dynamic segment revision for that run. A later Schedule a broadcast step must use that earlier audience step. The run detail shows the frozen audience and its evaluation time, which keeps the recipient decision inspectable.
